Dune bashing is the highlight of almost every Dubai desert safari — and if you have never done it, the anticipation can be as big as the dunes themselves. Here is exactly what to expect on your first 4×4 dune-bashing ride, from safety to what to wear.
What is dune bashing?
Dune bashing is off-road driving across the rolling sand dunes of the Arabian Desert in a powerful 4×4 vehicle. An experienced driver deflates the tyres for grip and then rides up, down and across the dunes, creating a rollercoaster-like thrill on natural terrain. It usually takes place in the late afternoon when temperatures drop and the light turns golden.
What to expect during the ride
Once you leave the tarmac, your driver will pause to reduce tyre pressure, then set off into the dunes. Expect sudden climbs, quick descents and sideways slides across the sand — all controlled by a professional who does this every day. A typical dune-bashing session lasts around 20 to 30 minutes, often with a stop at the top of a dune for photos and sunset views before continuing to the desert camp.
Safety and who should avoid it
Reputable operators use well-maintained 4x4s, seatbelts and trained drivers, so dune bashing is safe for most people. However, it can be bumpy. It is generally not recommended for pregnant women, people with back, neck or heart conditions, or anyone prone to severe motion sickness. Very young children should be assessed case by case. If in doubt, let your operator know in advance.
What to wear and bring
- Light, comfortable clothing and closed shoes or sandals you don’t mind getting sandy.
- Sunglasses and a light scarf — handy for wind and blown sand.
- A light jacket for the evening, as desert temperatures drop after sunset.
- A charged phone or camera for the views (secure it during the drive).
- Avoid a heavy meal right before the ride if you are prone to motion sickness.
